Why shouldn't I buy a camera and just take the photos myself?

You certainly could, and if you only need a few snapshots and quality isn't important to you it may make sense to just do it yourself. Otherwise there are a number of reasons to purchase images from PlantCafe:

Quality: We use a variety of camera bodies and SLR lenses with each piece costing many hundreds or thousands of dollars. We match the equipment to the photos we are taking. Our equipment, software, and techniques are updated frequently to keep up with the constant changes in technology. We use pro quality SLR lenses ranging from 12 to 300 mm giving you a unique perspective on what otherwise may be a common plant. We have spent considerable money, time and effort to assure the best image possible.

Time: Don't underestimate the amount of time and effort involved in taking and organizing photos. For every hour photographing in the field we spend 10 to 15 hours getting the photos edited, labeled, cataloged, stored, backed up, scanned, downloaded, indexed, and ready for you to view. We regularly drive hundreds of miles to get to a shoot location and spend many nights in hotels. We regularly photograph in about a dozen states and several countries.

Convenience: We have the photos you need now, available for instant download and use. In many cases the window of opportunity to photograph a plant in perfect condition is vary narrow. A hosta may only look perfect for several weeks before hail, insects, and the sun take their toll on the foliage. This may fall during your busiest time of the year.

Cost: We keep your cost per photo low by making the photos available to multiple buyers. When you factor in equipment, travel, your time, and other costs you will see PlantCafe images cost you a fraction of what you would pay to take the same photo yourself.

Variety: We specialize in horticulture photographs. It is easy to find a generic maple, tulip or rose photograph. It is more difficult, if not nearly impossible, to license a royalty-free image of Thymus praecox ssp. arcticus 'White Moss'. We don't make you search through a million irrelevant images wasting your time and effort. We currently have photos of around 4000 different varieties of plants. Our search features make it easy for you to quickly find the image you need.

Realistically, you probably do not grow every plant you sell and you will not photograph every plant you need an image of. PlantCafe is here to help you sell more plants by providing the photos you need when you need them. We do our job so you can do yours!
