What do your image numbers mean?
Image numbers evolved over the years while photographing nursery stock. Over time the focus of using professional slide film has shifted to professional digital equipment and imaging software. Many of the numbers are based on a slide captioning software system, several digital camera software systems or a mix of both. Scanning labs put their own twist on numbers as does the software running this web site. With all that said the number will mean little to you. To us, however, they speak volumes. We can track an image back (using the image number as a starting place) to the day the photograph was taken. We can even track backwards to the original data entry recorded for that plant record. Today's cameras can record an almost endless amount of data concerning the photograph. Our early records record not only the basic data for the image, but lots of extra information concerning cloud cover, wind, light conditions, time of day, contacts we met that day and other interesting facts.

What image size do I need?
This can get a little complicated depending on the final image size you need, its use and the method of printing (if any). For a billboard viewed at 60 mph from 1000 feet away 15-20 DPI could work. For the side of a truck, around 25 dpi has been used. For the web, 72 DPI allows for fast downloads and viewing. For printing on an inkjet printer, you may be able to use around 200 DPI. For high quality, clear and crisp printing, your printer will require images at their final size in the layout of 300 DPI. Images from PlantCafe.com are viewed daily on the web, in catalogs, and on the sides of trucks. Consult your printer for their exact requirements.
